Microsoft Office 2010 Throws Down Google Gauntlet

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Next month, Microsoft Corp. will release Office 2010 into an IT world that Google Inc. has been reshaping as use of its Google Apps services has spread to organizations like the Los Angeles city government and Genentech Inc.

With its release of Office 2010 on May 12, Microsoft will complete an effort to move its extensive portfolio of applications to the cloud, offering its business and government customers a new way to deliver services to users.

But while Microsoft has a vast installed base of customers who use its Office suite of products heavily, its mindshare is clearly declining as more and more users embrace Google Apps.

Google moved early to make this a contest over which company offers the best contract terms and legal protections in cloud environments. The city of Los Angeles, which may be Google's marquee government user, has been frank in disclosing details of its agreement. By the end of June, Los Angeles expects to complete a transition of some 30,000 employees to Google Apps.

In a sense, Kevin Crawford, Los Angeles assistant director of IT, is Google's de facto public sector evangelist. He doesn't market Google directly, but he answers questions from many other local government and state officials who want specifics about the city's deal with Google. Indeed, at the SaaScon conference on cloud computing and software as a service here this week, Crawford has been peppered with questions about the contract terms.

Los Angeles has been frank about the contract, which includes unlimited damages for a data breach, provisions allowing audits, guarantees that the data remain in the contiguous 48 states, and penalties if Google's services are unavailable for any longer than five minutes a month.

The contract also gives the city the right to cancel its contract with Google "for convenience," Crawford said.

Contract terms aside, Tim O'Brien, the senior director of the platform strategy group at Microsoft, believes that his company has an advantage in the cloud business because of its experience in the enterprise market.

"We know a lot more than potentially any vendor in the industry about the types of questions [business customers] have because we have been through the enterprise software discussion before," O'Brien said in an interview here.

O'Brien argues that Microsoft's 15 years of experience with cloud-based services, which began with its acquisition of Hotmail in 1998, gives it particular strength in this environment.

Google's DNA is "primarily consumer Web," said O'Brien, noting that when the vendor agreed to allow Los Angeles to make a quick migration to another provider, it might not have considered the problems associated with such a move and the switching costs involved.

A major issue in cloud services is avoiding vendor lock-in by having application and data portability. There are no established means of accomplishing that, and O'Brien doesn't see agreements for them arriving quickly.

"There isn't one single center of gravity for cloud standards in the industry today," said O'Brien, who nonetheless says that Microsoft would embrace portability "because it levels the playing the field with vendors."

Genentech, a South San Francisco-based biotechnology company, adopted Google Apps for its 16,000 corporate users in 2007 but let the users decide whether they wanted to move to Google Docs. About 8,000 now use Docs.

The company's IT approach is give its users choices where possible, said Todd Pierce, senior vice president of IT at Genentech. "People will choose things that will really work for them," he said.

Google rolled out iPad optimized versions of their services with tablet-oriented interface. In other news a new application allows you to use your iPad-ish or iPhone-ish device as an additional multi-touch monitor to your iMac/MacBook.

Thanks to iDisplay app you can use your iPad or iPhone as a second monitor for your iMac or MacBook. The connection works both directions via Wi-Fi or 3G and you will be able to use your Apple gadget as an input device too.

The iDisplay costs $4.99 for iPad/iPhone and is already available into the AppStore. The Mac OS X software corresponding with the mobile app is also called iDisplay and you can get it from here.

The whole thing works over a simple remote desktop VNC protocol and according to first user reports, it works quite sluggish though it's "mousable".

Meanwhile the Google services have been optimized for iPad use. Browsing Gmail from your tablet will surprise you with HTML5-based interface organized into two touch-optimized panes. The new interface is still experimental and will undergo more changes.

If you don't own the new Apple gadget, but you are still curious to try the new tablet-oriented interface – there is a way. You need to use Mozilla Firefox and follow this guide. Just remember this is not intended for desktop usage.

New hi-res versions of Maps and YouTube apps for iPad are also available.

Finally, the new iPads are able to use the MobileMe security service. As usual it costs $99 per year but will make sure you can remotely erase all data on your lost or stolen device the moment it's connected to a 3G or Wi-Fi network.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya - Lengthy Love story

‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, (VTV) and you know what its like to cross the sky and get into another dimension called love. ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ is a popular lyric from the ‘Vennilave Vennilave’ song from ‘Minsara Kanavu’ directed by Rajeev Menon and all of you know that. So director Goutham Vasudev Menon has rightly acknowledged Rajeev Menon in the first card of the Titles. How humble!

Right from the time, the word ‘action’ was told, the film has been creating the ripples of expectation among director Goutham’s fans. He has surely tried his maximum to live up to the expectations. Captain Goutham and his team- comprising of editor Antony, art director Rajeevan, director of photography Manoj Paramahamsa and music by A R Rahman, just look at that combination, have always given us that feeling of modern cinema.

Well technically, the movie is made with high values- Exceptional music, background score, re-recording, classy camera work, foreign locations, etc. All the technicians involved must receive that imperative appreciation for they have done their work with much finesse.

The first in the list of technicians who have to be appreciated would be, undoubtedly, A R Rahman. Man! Isn’t he a creative genius! His 1st movie after the Oscar phenomenon. His music is one of the main reasons to the much acclaimed hype. The re-recording and the background score are really amazing. If you’ve listened to his songs in your personal stereo, then its only half of the magic you have experienced.

The picturisation of the songs is simply remarkable and they complete the magic. God knows how Goutham gets his ideas and the eye of Manoj Paramahamsa who’s done ‘Eeram’ before, not just his eye that thought of those exotic locations but his ‘lens eye’ as well that caught all those beautiful locales. Watch those videos even with half opened eyes and you’ll realize he hasn’t used a camera but a paint brush with the palette of colours from Mother Nature. The colour tones in the movie have been brought out quite amazingly. The songs especially, ‘Hosana’ and ‘Omanna Penne’ shot at Malta, are worth the watch at the cinemas. Songs get major attention in the movie and the other technician we are going to talk about is Rajeevan and his art-work in the sets of a few songs is fascinating. The D.O.P (director of photography) Manoj has used minimal artificial lighting in the movie, showing his signature style.

We’ll come back to the people behind the camera a little later. Now is the time for the people in front of the camera. Trisha and Silambarasan as the lead pair, and quite a few veterans in the movie like Kitty as Silambarasan’s father and Bob Antony as Trisha’s father. All artists have done well especially Ganesh, also one of the producers, who plays Silambarasan’s friend, has acted well, and his dialogue delivery must be appreciated. Lets talk about- Silambarasan! We’ve seen him as a college student, as a mass character and we’ve seen him dance in the middle of the road, typical Chennai style, but can you imagine Silambarasan in formals, as a simple, regular guy-next door, decent and at his best behaviour? Well, he has proved he is not just the normal run-off-the-mill commercial hero but an actor who will mould himself into any character that a story demands. He’s come out of that commercial image with VTV. All were apprehensive about the fact that Silambarasan working with a classy director like Goutham. But the director has been persistent about Silambarasan and he hasn’t let the director down. Silambarasan has been in front of the camera since he was a kid and such a role as ‘Karthik’ in this movie is really not demanding or impossible to him. He hasn’t acted in this movie, but has been himself. His dialogue delivery appeared to be simple, just like how he would talk to anyone in his real life. He is an ambitious and aspiring film maker in the movie and in real life, he really is.

Opposite Silambarasan is pretty lass Trisha. Trisha as Jessie has portrayed her character brilliantly, she hasn’t over acted or under acted, and she’s done it perfectly. Director of Photography, Manoj has prettified Trisha, and she looks prettier than her previous appearances. Saree clad in most of the movie, Trisha has pulled off a terrific performance. Nalini Sriram’s costumes might start a cult with the ladies from now on.

Now we’re moving in to the ‘story, screenplay and dialogues’, by Goutham. Don’t expect us to be spoilsport and reveal the storyline and the cute screenplay of the movie. The first half till the interval will grab your attention as it has been nicely written and well taken. Some cute scenes between Silambarasan and Trisha look really candid and the camera man has managed to capture that cheeky chemistry between the two. According to the film promos, theatrical trailers, etc ‘VTV’ is a love story ‘with a difference’. There wasn’t anything particularly different to talk about, except for Simbu being younger to Trisha by one year, and the screenplay that won’t tell you till the end if they’ve fall in love and live happily ever after?

Silambarasan wooing Trisha, their second pairing after ‘Alai’, is not at all impractical and you can relate their characters to real life. Their chemistry is enticing and they actually appear a cute pair. Silambarasan’s attitude in the movie is straight forward while Trisha is homely and conservative. The one thing you can’t relate to life or even agree is the hero meeting the heroine at her house, at his will without anyone noticing. Cinema has grown of age, or have people!?

The screenplay in the first half is slow and cute but the screenplay in the second half is even slower.

A faster screenplay might spoil the feel of a romantic movie. Back to technicians, Editor Antony has done a decent job but could have advised his Captain to chop off a few reels. Some of the audience thought the movie got over and they got off their seats when a song was being played! but the movie continued for 10 more minutes after that.

Silambarasan, we all know fights well and dances amazingly. There is just one stunt sequence in the movie and that’s designed by Shiva who’s handled the fight scenes very well and Silambarasan is the demi-god we know, sustains not a single scratch on him. Silambarasan’s dance is admirable. Keeping in mind that most of the songs are not dance numbers, you’ll still see him sway to those tunes convincingly.

Dialogues in the movie and especially Silambarasan’s dialogue delivery is worth mentioning. The dialogues make you giggle at times, and sometimes they make you feel- how one can be so romantic.

Director Goutham has tried something ‘different’ but the audience is perplexed at the end. You wouldn’t know how to react after the climax. Weird! If you’ve been following all his movies and know his style of film making, then you would appreciate his work. There were rumours about two climaxes to the movie. The version the audience saw on the first day is not really lively.

Finally a disclaimer: If and only if, you have all the time in the world, and you like the slow romantic genre, you’ll enjoy this one.

HTC HD2 doesn't qualify for a Windows Phone 7 upgrade

Bad news for the HTC HD2 owners: your beloved WinMo smartphones does not qualify for a Windows Phone 7 upgrade. The reason is more than ridiculous but you can't do anything to change the situation: the HD2 packs five hardware buttons instead of only 3.

Yeap, the HTC HD2 has a zippy 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a huge capacitive touchscreen display of high resolution and lots of other goodies but according to a Microsoft representative the HD2 "doesn't qualify because it doesn't have the three buttons [layout]".

According to another MS spokesman, the reason for HD2 to skip the upgrade to Microsoft's latest OS for mobile devices is actually the lack of some hardware components.

Well, Microsoft remain silent on the actual full hardware requirements for Windows Phone 7 OS so speculations are abundant.

Budget leaves much to be desired: NRIs

MUSCAT Non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the Sultanate have welcomed India's annual budget terming it positive for the country but were disappointed over its failure to address the concerns of overseas Indians.

"Overall it is a growth-oriented budget. But the government of India has ignored the welfare and protection of Gulf-based Indian workers. There is no mention about the exclusive fund for NRI returnees, who lost their jobs in the wake of the economic recession," members of the expatriate Indian community said.

Oman Tribune spoke to a cross-section of the community to seek their views.

Excerpts:

VT Saileswaran, managing director, Apollo Medical Centre (AMC), Muscat: Overall, the budget is positive. It will encourage NRIs to invest in India. The stable government and strong economic policies will propel the growth. The government's move to introduce new slabs on personal income tax is certain to benefit a large section of tax-payers who would now have to pay less income tax.

Sridhar Chinnasami, general manager, Shanfari Readymix: It is a growth-oriented budget which has a conventional approach, increasing duties for luxury items like ACs, luxury cars and so on. On the other hand, education and infrastructure projects like power and road construction at 20km per day are quite intriguing. Reduced home loan rates will definitely encourage the middle class to get a roof of their own. Specific importance on reducing import duties on magnetron components, used in microwave ovens, has taken me by surprise after noticing the major power shortage. However, the rising food price issue has not been fully addressed. The decision to not increase the passenger fares in the railway budget is a welcome step. The stock market has reacted positively and the growth trend in all segments is expected to continue. The unorganised sector will certainly benefit from public fund contributions that give help to social security benefits.

Dr Anchan CK, Towell Solutions: Perhaps, it would be better to call it an 'OK budget'. The expectations from the people in India as well as the NRIs had been very high. But considering the difficult circumstances and the state of the global economy, one could say that it is OK. I strongly feel that there should have been more focus on manufacturing industry. Rural development, particularly agriculture, would have gone a long way in the creation of more wealth and more employment opportunities. The other aspect is the higher cost of doing business, which of course will affect the consumers.

Rajiv Ahuja, head, corporate communications, Khimjis: Judging from past budgets, I must say that whenever there was an increase in petroleum prices, marginal or otherwise, it has always had a spiralling effect on prices. This spiralling effect in the long run always affects the common man. From that point of view, this is definitely an anti-populist budget, which perhaps may not augur well for the Indian government. In fact, this could prove to be risky and politically damaging. The Indian government is looking at growth, but has not taken stock of the ground realities.

Mohammed Sajid Khan, country manager-Oman, ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants): I think the budget is realistic and judiciously balanced. The focus on fiscal consolidation is good in the long run. It is good to see continued focus on infrastructure. There have been steps to increase spending in healthcare, schools, infrastructure, roads and rural power sector. The focus on renewable energy as well as the fund for developing technology in clean energy are all encouraging. With thrust on infrastructure in rural areas and focus on agricultural growth, the farm sector may witness a growth of 6-7 per cent next year and add one per cent to the GDP in FY-II.

It remains to be seen what happens to the direct tax code, which had created a lot of uncertainty. In addition, the amount of divestment that is being talked about is also good as it brings in more retail money to capital markets. While the revised tax slabs will leave more money with the consumers, on the other hand they might end up paying more with the hike in fuel prices leading to overall price hike. With the rise in the price of petroleum products, the prices of all commodities will rise further.

Madhusudhanan EG, senior marketing manager, Decorstone International: The budget has good and bad recommendations for the common man. The government has focused on disinvestment. This is a welcome step. However, to increase its revenue, the government should have taken some more steps to collect taxes, which are not being collected. In terms of tax slabs, the budget is really good. If the government can ensure the collection of taxes from all, it will definitely increase the revenue of the government, which could be spent on development works.

The increase in oil prices in the international market should not be used as a tool to increase the fuel price.

Ratheesan K, administration manager, Hassan Ali Engineering Consultancy: The budget is disappointing for the NRIs. The expatriates have been ignored totally. The government, which has been talking of an exclusive fund for NRI returnees, who had lost their employment in the wake of the global recession, has left out the issue completely from the budget.

PJ Mani, business development manager, Modern Velocity Infotech:

The budget is a good one. It has taken care of the salaried taxpayers by increasing the income tax limit. It has allocated more funds for infrastructure development, which is very essential so that in the coming years India will have a good infrastructure in comparison with other countries. The funds allocated for school education also has got an increase. This is a welcome sign. The increase in excise duty only by two per cent is a positive factor and higher excise duty on tobacco products is indirect way of asking people to stop smoking. It is advisable to increase excise duty to higher levels on tobacco products in such a way that people would be wary in buying cigarette and other tobacco-based products.

Overall, the budget is good with a deficit target of 5.5 per cent of the GDP.

Google Upgrades Six Gmail Features, Cuts Five Others

Google has made some changes to its Gmail service, upgrading six Gmail Labs experiments (like YouTube previews) to become standard Gmail features, while permanently dropping five others (including location-based signatures). Check out the list below to see what's become a regular part of your Gmail experience, and if any of your favorite Labs features are gone for good. Whenever possible, I've listed alternatives to those Gmail features that have been lost to the dustbin of history.

ADDED

Search Autocomplete: When you start typing in the Gmail search box you'll start to see see suggestions just as you do when searching on Google.com. Gmail suggestions will include contact names, labels, and advanced search operators like "from:" and "to:".

Go To Label: If you want to search for a specific label just type 'gl' and the "label:' search operator will pop-up in your Gmail search box. Just start typing the first few letters of the label name until it is highlighted below, hit enter, and all of your messages with that label will appear. To use this feature you must have keyboard shortcuts enabled, and your cursor cannot be in the search box when you type the keyboard shortcut 'gl'. While this is a handy new feature for keyboard shortcut addicts, in my tests it was just as fast to select your label from the left hand column using your mouse.

Forgotten Attachment Detector: This feature alerts you when you've forgotten to include an attachment, by analyzing your e-mail messages for words like 'attached' and 'included.'

YouTube Previews: If someone sends you a YouTube link via e-mail, you'll be able to watch the video right inside Gmail.

Custom Label Colors: Color code your labels for easier organization. Google says you can choose from over 4000 color combinations to differentiate each label. You are supposed to be able to do this by clicking on 'add custom colors' from the regular label interface, but at the time of this writing this feature was not available for me.

Vacation Resonder: Set your vacation days in advance in Gmail, by specifying a beginning and end date for your vacation autoresponse. To activate Vacation Responder click on 'Settings' in the upper right hand corner of your inbox and then click on the 'General' tab.

DUMPED

Muzzle: This feature hid your friends' Gmail chat status messages to conserve screen real estate. Not everyone is happy with Google's decision to dump Muzzle. Users have started an online petition to bring back Muzzle and even created a Gmail Muzzle Twitter account to help get the word out.

Fixed Width Font: An option found in the Reply menu that let you view messages in a fixed width font. Firefox users can still use this feature by adding this Greasemonkey script or you can try out this CSS hack .

E -mail Addict: A feature that shut down your Gmail for 15 minutes so you could get some work done. As the name suggests, this was a great feature for more undisciplined Gmail users. Firefox users can try out PageAddict as an alternative .

Location in Signature: This one is a little surprising considering the popular rise of location-based services, but Gmail has cut a tool that automatically displayed your location as part of your Gmail signature .

Random Signature: Placed a random famous quote at the end of your e-mail signature. Windows users can try out a program called Quotes that puts random quotes at the end of your signature using an e-mail client or Webmail. The catch is, you have to create your own quotes list, so check out this list of quotes from Wisestamp to help get you started.

Mistake : Too Many Buttons

Call it Benj's Law: The number of buttons on the average TV remote control doubles every 15 years. Let's take a look at the button forecast:

1950: four buttons
1965: eight buttons
1980: 16 buttons
1995: 32 buttons
2010: 64 buttons
2025: 128 buttons
2040: 256 buttons
2055: 512 buttons

The current Time Warner Cable DVR remote control (circa 2009) already sports 62 buttons (yes, really), most of which no one ever uses. As silly as the above forecasts seem, they might be a bit too relaxed: with the way things are going, TWC might upend Benj's Law and release a remote with a button for every single channel next year.

There's simply no need for so many buttons, be it 62, 128, or 1000; many modern remote functions could be simplified through clever use of on-screen menus. Designer Tai Chiem has come out with the PSP 2 design. This concept comes with OLED display that can be rolled up when not in use. It features an electric charge powering the display, stereo speakers on either side double as a jog wheel and camera control. Nice work but I'm sure that it is not going to happen, for PSP I mean, could be useful for other devices maybe to come in that shape. More pictures after the break.

Sony just barely updated the PSP but designer Tai Chiem is already thinking about the next iteration. His design calls for a flexible OLED display that can be conveniently rolled. An electric charge powering the display stiffens it while providing near bezeless prime real estate for gaming. Stereo speakers on either side double as a jog wheel and camera control. He also envisages Sony finally implementing two joysticks. Pipe dream or not, it's sexy and lives up to its name; it don't get any more portable than this.

Kerala Awaiting Dubai Internet City's Response

With new offers for the proposed Rs.15 billion Smart City in Kochi coming its way, the Kerala government is awaiting a final response from Dubai Internet City (DIC) officials on the project.

Joseph C. Mathew, IT advisor to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, told IANS, "We have made it very clear to DIC that under no circumstances would the land given for the project be made freehold.

"Almost 10 days back we informed them that the government was not interested in giving a freehold on the land. The land would only be given on a leasehold basis and we are not insisting on the period of leasehold," said Mathew.

The total land to be leased for the project is 248 acres at a cost of Rs.1.04 billion. A pet project of the previous United Democratic Front government, the Smart City project involves the setting up of an IT park in Kochi.

The DIC team was here for discussions in the last week of February, following which Achuthanandan had announced that a final decision on the project would be taken before the assembly session began March 2. But things did not go according to plan, as DIC insisted on freehold rights to the land.

"They have agreed on all the other terms and it is only on this aspect that the project has been delayed. We have decided to would wait for some more time and then send them a final letter asking for their decision," said Mathew.

Reports indicate that the Achuthanandan government is insisting on giving only leasehold rights because two other players - the Hong Kong-based JB Group and the local giant Muthoot Papachan Group - have submitted proposals that are far more attractive than the DIC proposal.

"Yes, two companies have announced their interest by meeting the chief minister and also holding press conferences. Now Prakash is all set to try his luck in Bollywood.

Acclaimed Marathi director Nishikanth Desai are busy giving final touches to his maiden Tamil venture Evano Oruvan. Starring Madhavan and Sangeetha in lead roles, the movie has musical score by G V Prakash.

Says the director, "I listened to some songs in Veyyil. Impressed with the music, approached Prakash to work in Evano Oruvan. Prakash has given amazing tunes for my movie. Amazed by his mastery, I have assigned him to work in my forthcoming Hindi film."

After Veyyil, Prakash is busy with Kireedom. The movie starring Ajith and Trisha has six songs.

Love him or hate him but you just can't ignore the face of the Xbox 360 in India; no, I'm not talking about Yuvraj Singh (although you would love to hate him now) or Akshay Kumar; I'm talking about Mohit Anand, Country Manager, Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division.

The Xbox 360 has been officially launched in India for a while now and from the way it's selling, it's pretty evident that it's here to stay. But even then there are a disgruntled few who seem pretty disappointed about certain "facilities" that should have been available at launch. To (hopefully) put things into perspective, we have a hearty chat with Mohit Anand who talks about Microsoft's plans in India.

How well has the Xbox 360 been selling in India? Has it exceeded your expectations?
The Xbox 360 has evoked a phenomenal response among gamers in India and we are much ahead of our targets.

Why is it so tough to get a VGA cable in India? Is it because of some sort of a customs problem?
Well it is not a custom problem but there are certain legal statutory requirements such as power cables that need to be ISI certified even if the plug does not need certification, but we assure you that we are working towards it and the legal statutory requirements would shortly be put in place for convenience.

When can we expect Live in India? What's causing the delay? As and when Live does get launched, can we expect regional content on the Marketplace as well? Do you plan on retailing XBL subscription/prepaid cards in India?
I would like to confirm hereby that we would be launching Live in India this calendar year, hence request you to stay tuned for exact date and time.

Will India get a movie distribution service like the XBL Marketplace in the US?
As I mentioned to you earlier that we will soon be launching Live in India and would share more details closer to the launch.

Crackdown was released here nearly 5 days before its American release; can we expect the same treatment for other titles as well?
We are committed to bring the latest games on Xbox 360 to India very soon. We are committed to working with third party gamers so that we can bring the most awaited games on time to our gaming patrons. In India gaming is still in a very nascent stage and Xbox 360 is blazing the trail, which nobody is following, so to get wide eco system we have been successful in launching around 45 titles which we have today and would be launching many more, in times to come.

Do you game yourself? Have you played the 360 system seller; Gears of War?
Whenever I get time I do try my hand on my favorite console and and yes, I have played Gears of War.

What are your views regarding the PS3 and the Wii?
We always welcome competition. As the first entrant in the Indian market, we're pleased to be able to bring Indian gamers what they want, much ahead of any other console. Gamers in India have been craving next-generation gaming and entertainment experiences, which only Xbox 360 can offer. We believe, that for ultimately winning the hearts and minds of gamers, it isn't about raw console power alone but innovative and connected high-definition digital entertainment and all of that is available on the Xbox 360 today.

Will we have official vendors that will provide free shipping for 360 titles in India?
We do have an E- Store on E Bay site as a Microsoft Store and is run by our key retails partners. All gamers ordering through that store today are given free shipping across India. We will add more such options in times to come

Has the budget affected the price of the console or the games? If so kindly elaborate.
The budget has not affected the prices of the console as well as games, though we are disappointed since the lowering of duties and the subsequent benefits would have been passed on to the consumers at large. Nevertheless, we are committed to continue working with the government.

Can you pass on any info regarding the "Zephyr" (which by the way is now called the Elite)?
We would not like to respond to any kind of rumors and speculations.

What are your future plans regarding the Xbox 360?
Well the future plan is to create gaming as the third pillar of entertainment in India, after Movies and Sports.

Wii for all Ages

If you doubted that the Wii would appeal to the masses, it's time to put your foot in your mouth (need some toe-jam on your bread?). Since the launch of Nintendo's little bundle of joy, the console's been selling like hot-cakes amongst people of all ages. It seems now, that even the elderly are catching the Wii fever (or Wii-ver rather).

One such lady who fell victim to the Wii-ver is 82 year-old Ruth Ebert, who started playing Tennis on the Wii at her home in the Virginia retirement community. "I played tennis, if you can call it that, as a high school student. I had such fun doing it", she said. Ruth says that swinging the Wiimote reminded her of the days when she actually played tennis in her youth.

Here's another testament to the Wii's popularity amongst the elderly; Flora Dierbach, 72, who's part of an entertainment committee for a retirement community, helped arrange a bowling tournament. "It's a very social thing and it's good exercise ... and you don't have to throw a 16-pound (7.25-kg) bowling ball to get results," said Dierbach. "We just had a ball with it. You think it's your grandkids' game and it's not."

It's really great that through their console, Nintendo is helping bridge a generation gap, by introducing people who've never played a video game in their youth, to the joy of gaming.

Sivaji advance booking: ticket rates-Rs. 1600!

Sivaji is all set to release on the 12th of April and the excitement is palpable. Everyone wants to watch the movie in theaters on the first day. The expectations generated by Sivaji have been unprecedented. Not only is this Rajini's first movie in two years after the huge success of

Chandramukhi, it is also the first time that the man with the Midas touch, Shankar has directed Rajini. Add to it the fact that A.R.Rahman has scored the music and that AVM has spared no expense in making the movie on a lavish scale; we know that we have a high quality product coming our way. Who would not want to watch such a movie in theaters when it is just a day or just hours old? Even Chandramukhi had witnessed crowds that had refused to die down for weeks after the release. So it would only make sense to assume that the crowds this time round are going to be close to unmanageable.

The better part of the crowd that swarms theaters during the first two weeks of a Rajini film consists of the hardcore Rajini loyalists belonging to any of the numerous fans' associations. They take pride and honor from being the first ones to see a Rajini film on the big screen. This time round too they want to retain their position of pride. But taking into account the interest that the general public is taking in Sivaji and also the fact that ticket rates have a ceiling this time, it is not going to be easy for the fans of Rajini to monopolize theaters during the first few days.

But the loyalists that they are, they have found a way to work around this problem; if tickets cannot be bought or booked at counters, then book them even before tickets are available at counters. Confused, read further.

A scheme has been devised by Rajini and his close associates to enable his long standing loyal supporters catch Sivaji in theaters without any hassles. Advance booking for Sivaji tickets is still a few weeks away, but the fans have already got their tickets. Not exactly tickets, but tokens that will get them tickets at counters. The Central Rajini fans association is issuing tokens to constituent Rajini fans associations which can be exchanged for tickets at theaters.

The scheme is as follows. The head of a fans association can obtain a token by paying a sum of Rs. 1600. The token can be exchanged for twenty tickets at any theater playing Sivaji over the first five days after Sivaji's release. The token can be used to get four tickets a day over the five day period. Each ticket has been priced at Rs. 50. So, the total cost of 20 tickets is Rs. 1000. The balance Rs. 600 is a caution deposit which will be refunded later. So, every Rajini fan will be satisfied at having been able to watch their idol on screen before most people have, they surely will have a story to tell.

Distribution of tokens has been going on for a few days now at the Raghavendra Auditorium in Chennai. Also, a word of cautionâ€¦.. if you are currently hatching any plot to obtain a token-ticket, then beware. Any misuse of this facility meant only for Rajini fans will be met with legal action.

This is an offer meant only for registered members of registered Rajini fans associations of the state.

Vijay is on a tour to the southern states to promote and celebrate his Pokkiri victory. Pokkiri's 64th day - strange number to celebrate as you may think - celebrations are underway in Thoothukkudi, Kanyakumari, and Tirunelveli. Theatre owners of the districts

were felicitated by Vijay on the occasion. The event, held in Geetha Hotel in Thoothukkudi yesterday 16/03/07, was chaired by Pokkiri's producer Rameshbabu.
Later, Vijay answered questions of the press ranging from his latest project to his interests in other language movies. Answering questions about Azhagiya Tamil Magan Vijay stated that the movie is poles apart from Pokkiri. "It is a thriller," he let out a clue. Why does he rely on remake movies? Does he think these are safe bets? "No", Vijay was ready to retort. "That is just a myth. Most of my movies released last year were direct projects," he substantiated his reply.

Nasulin: Injection-less insulin on anvil

Drug Controller general of India's approval for phase II clinical evaluation of Nasulin among Type 2 diabetes patients is a big thumbs up for Biocon apart from providing a great relief for diabetic patients in terms of controlling the progression of the diseases as well as curtailing cost of treatment. According to Biocon sources, the DGCI approval has been given to Biocon's licensing partner Bentley Pharmaceuticals Inc of the USA.

The approval follows completion of Bentley's pharmacokinetic clinical studies of Nasulin in India. The Phase II study will be initiated in March by Clinigene, a CAP accredited CRO and wholly-owned subsidiary of Biocon. The study is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Nasulin is Bentley's intranasal insulin product utilizing its proprietary delivery technology CPE-215.

As per the licensing agreement, Biocon is responsible for developing and marketing Nasulin in India. Biocon provides the source of Nasulin powder, while Cardinal Health will manufacture clinical supplies for the phase II study under contract with Bentley.

Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw explained to Y Maheshwara Reddy of Vijay Times about the benefits of the DGCI approval for the common man and the industry. "Patients can look forward to larger doses of insulin intake without fear of injections," she stated.

What is your reaction to the approval from DCGI?
This is an important approval that allows us to move to the next level of development. Nasulin is a partnered product with US based Bentley Pharmaceuticals. This approval will allow Biocon to undertake parallel studies in India and the USA.

How would it benefit Biocon?
The product has been developed using Biocon's Insulin. Success means that Biocon will benefit both from Insulin supplies as well as marketing opportunities in India and several world markets. Nasulin has the potential of being a multi-billion Dollar drug.

How will Nasulin benefit diabetic patients in the country ?
Any form of Insulin that needn't be injected will have better patient acceptance. It will thereby provide better compliance and better diabetes control. Diabetes is a huge disease in India. India in fact is the world's Diabetic capital. Indian diabetic patients can certainly benefit from such new Insulin therapies.

What are the advantages for the use compared to insulin injections?
Better compliance and hence better diabetes control

What will the cost of benefit be for a patient?
Better diabetes control will mean better control on progression of the disease. In fact, it is the progression of the disease that makes it expensive to control. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to cardiac, renal, retinal and neural complications which are costly to treat.

A Real Story Happenned in Chennai !

This is a true story of a young college girl who passed away last month. Her name was Priya. She was hit by a lorry.
She has a boy friend named Shankar. Both of them are true lovers. They always hang on the phone. You can never
see her without her handphone. In fact she also changed her phone from Airtel to Hutch, so both of them can be on
the same network, and save on the cost.
She spends half of the day talking with shankar. Priya's family knows about their relationship. Shankar is very close
with Priya's family. (just imagine their love) . Before she passed away she always told her friends "If I pass away
please burn me with my handphone" she also said the same thing to her parents.
After her death, people cant carry her coffin, I was there. A lot of them tried to do so but still cant , everybody including
me, had tried to carry the coffin, the result is still the same. Eventually, they called their neighbour, a "bomoh" from
Thailand (pak Darin), who is a friend of her father. He took a stick and started speaking to himself slowly. After a few
minutes, he said "this girl misses something here". then her friends told Darin about her intentions to burn her with her
phone. He then opened the coffin and place her phone and SIM card inside the casket. after that they tried to carry the
coffin. It could be moved and they carried it into the van easily. All of us were shocked.
Priya's parents did not inform Shankar that Priya had passed away. After 2 weeks Shankar called Priya's mom.
Shankar :...."Atte, I'm coming home today. Cook something nice for me. Dont tell Priya that I'm coming home today, i
wanna surprise her." Her mother replied....."You come home first, i wanna tell you something very important." after he
came, they told him the truth about Priya.
Shankar thinks that they were playing a fool. He was laughing and said "dont try to fool me - tell Priya to come out, i
have a gift for her Please stop this nonsense". then they show him the original death certificate to him. They gave him
proof to make him believe. (Shankar started to sweat) ..
He said... "Its not true. we spoke yesterday. She still calls me. Shankar was shaking. Suddenly, Shankar's phone rang.
"see this is from Priya, see this..." he showed the phone to priya's family. all of them told him to answer.he talked
using the loudspeaker mode. all of them heard his conversation.
