Surya, Jyotika together for a cause

For the first time after their wedding, actors Surya and Jyotika have acted together in a short film to bring about awareness on Autism, a disability that is little known in India.

The short film is their first onscreen appearance together after Sillunu Oru Kadhal.

In simple colloquial Tamil, the couple explains what autism is, it's common manifestations and how important it is to identify and treat it early.

According to a study in the US, there could be one case of autism in every 200 people.

In most cases, autistic children are mistaken to be mentally retarded and are wrongly treated due to lack of awareness, making their condition more difficult.

"We thought it is a good cause. I did not know about it earlier and learnt about it only when we came here. The kids could recognize me during my second visit. So a lot can be changed if they are diagnosed early. We are spreading this message," said Surya, Actor.

Produced by a renowned media house in Chennai and shot by the well-known cinematographer PC Shriram, the short film will be screened in 130 theatres across Tamil Nadu.

Motivating people

During all the shows, the aim is also to motivate socially conscious people to develop more resource centres for autism.

"Even if one parent gets to see the movie and if it helps a child to be diagnosed early, I think the movie would have done its job," said Jayendra Panchapakesan, Director, Real Image.

"The discomfort the parents have when they discover that something is not right with their children can be eased out to a great extent. The awareness is vital as far as autism goes," said Hemamalini Jairam, Director, We Can.

A few months ago Ahed Mohan was denied entry into an aircraft just because he was autistic.

However, now his parents are happy that this attempt will sensitize the community.

"Overall they would know that autism is a disability, and even though they look typical like other kids, they too have difficulties and they will be able to understand that," said Beena, Parent.

The aim of the film is to take the message across rural and urban Tamil Nadu to generate an increased level of awareness on autism and help the children slowly integrate within the society.
